Even if its name might suggest it, it's not always sufficient to apply the "Watercolor" filter to obtain a realistic watercolor effect. Here is a simple technique that gives you more control on the painting and texture parameters. |

1. Open the original photo, unlock the background and rename the layer as "Base".
2. Increase the lightness and, if desired, change the colors in the "Hue/Saturation" dialog (Ctrl+U or Image -> Adjustements -> Hue/Saturation)
Example: Lightness + 34%
3. Make a copy of the backgorund layer by dragging it on the "Create a new layer" icon and rename it "Details" |
 |
4. Go back to the "Base" layer and apply the "Accented Edges" filter (Filter -> Brush Strokes -> Accented Edges)
Try the following settings:
- Edge Width: 2
- Edge Brightness: 19
- Smoothness: 15 |
 |
5. Now select the "Details" layer and apply the Paint Daubs filter
(Filter -> Artistic -> Paint Daubs)
Try the following settings:
- Brush Size: 4
- Sharpness: 0
- Brush Type: Wide Sharp
|
 |
6. Set the Blending Options for this layer to "Overlay" and its opacity to about 60%.
Make sure the "Details" layer is above the "Base " layer. |
 |
7. Create a new layer, move it above the "Details" and "Base" layers and rename it as "Fibers". Fill it with white.
8. Set the foreground color as white and the background color as a 50% gray.
9. Apply the "Fibers" filter (Filter -> Render -> Fibers) with the following settings:
- Variance: 50
- Strenght: 4 |
 |
10. Now set its Blending mode to "Overlay" and its opacity to about 12%.
This will add to the image a texture like looking. |
 |
11. If you wish to add a canvas texture to the image, create a new layer, rename it as "Canvas" and move it above the other layers. Fill it with white color, make sure you still have the foreground and backgroud colors set as white and 50% grey.
12. Apply the "Texturizer" filter (Filters -> Texture -> Texturizer) with the following settings:
- Texture: Canvas
- Scaling: 120%
- Relief: 10
- Light: choose the one you prefer (in the example I chose "Right")
If you prefer, you may vary these settings to create different a canvas. |
 |
13. Now set the "Canvas" layer mode to "Multiply" and its opacity to about 25%.
